East Bay Regional Park District Completes Structural Resurfacing on Iron Horse Trail Bridges Through Alamo and Walnut Creek
Multi-use commuter corridor receives new anti-skid decking, ADA-compliant approach ramps, and solar-powered milepost wayfinding signage.

Trail maintenance crews with the East Bay Regional Park District completed a multi-week structural rehabilitation project on Monday, successfully reopening three historic pedestrian bridges along the Iron Horse Regional Trail through Alamo and Walnut Creek. Funded through Measure WW regional park bonds and state active transportation grants, the $860,000 capital maintenance initiative replaced weathered timber stringers with recycled composite anti-skid decking, restored structural steel trusses, and smoothed transitional approach asphalt.
Park district engineers inspected the newly finished bridge spans crossing Stone Valley Creek and Las Trampas Creek on Monday morning before cutting the ribbon to welcome hundreds of waiting cyclists, joggers, and morning commuters. The modernized decking significantly reduces wet-weather slip hazards while enhancing seismic stability for emergency maintenance vehicles. In addition, the district installed solar-illuminated mile markers and emergency call boxes linked directly to regional park police dispatch.
Commuters traveling between Alamo, Danville, and the Walnut Creek BART station celebrated the prompt completion of the project, which was finished three days ahead of schedule. Bicycle advocacy coalitions throughout Contra Costa County highlighted that the Iron Horse Trail serves as a critical green commuter spine that removes thousands of motor vehicles from Interstate 680 every week. The district's trail safety team also refreshed high-visibility road crossing striping at Livorna Road and Stone Valley Road.
Cyclists, runners, and equestrians can review detailed trail maps, upcoming resurfacing phases, and regional park rules online at ebparks.org. Inquiries regarding regional trail maintenance and volunteer stewardship projects may be directed to the East Bay Regional Park District public information desk Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM at (888) 327-2757. Park rangers will host a community bicycle safety checkpoint on the trail in Alamo this coming Saturday morning at 9:00 AM.
