Museum of the San Ramon Valley Opens Late-Autumn Heritage Tours and Railroad Depot Exhibits in Downtown Danville
Docents at the restored 1891 Southern Pacific Depot lead weekend history walks along Railroad Avenue and the Iron Horse Trail.

Curators and volunteer historians at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley are welcoming residents and weekend visitors to the restored 1891 Southern Pacific Railroad Depot at 205 Railroad Avenue in downtown Danville this week for the museum's late-October exhibitions and autumn heritage walking tours. Situated directly beside the Iron Horse Regional Trail and the Danville Farmers' Market promenade, the landmark wooden depot preserves the Indigenous, ranching, agricultural, and railroad history that shaped Danville, Alamo, Diablo, and San Ramon.
Inside the main freight room and ticket office, autumn displays trace how the arrival of the San Ramon Branch Line in 1891 transformed the valley's wheat fields, walnut orchards, and pear packing sheds into a connected East Bay community. Visitors can inspect original telegraph keys, vintage baggage carts, historic photographs from the museum's digital archive, and interactive exhibits detailing the 300-year-old Old Oak Tree on Diablo Road and Eugene O'Neill's Tao House retreat on the ridges above Danville.
In partnership with the Town of Danville and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, museum docents are also hosting autumn weekday field trips for local third-grade classes alongside Saturday morning architectural walking tours along Hartz Avenue, Prospect Avenue, and Front Street. Each guided walk highlights Victorian and Craftsman storefronts, pioneer civic halls, and the community preservation campaign that saved the 1891 depot from demolition in the 1990s.
The Museum of the San Ramon Valley is open Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents can reserve group docent tours, explore historical archive photographs, or volunteer online at museumsrv.org or by calling (925) 837-3750.
